Computing multivalued physical observables for the semiclassical limit of the Schrödinger equation

We develop a level set method for the computation of multivalued physical observables (density, velocity, etc.) for the semiclassical limit of the Schrödinger equation. This method uses an Eulerian formulation and applies directly to arbitrary number of space dimensions. The main idea is to evolve the density near an n-dimensional manifold that is identified as the common zeros of n level set functions in phase space. These level set functions are generated from solving the Liouville equation with initial data chosen to embed the phase gradient. Simultaneously we track a new quantity f by solving again the Liouville equation near the obtained zero level set but with initial density as initial data. The multivalued density and higher moments are thus resolved by integrating f along the n-dimensional manifold in the phase directions. We show that this is equivalent to using the Wigner approach but decomposing the velocity from the density, each of which evolves by the same Liouville equation. The main advantages of this approach, in contrast to the standard kinetic equation approach using the Liouville equation with a Dirac measure initial data, include: (1) the Liouville equations are solved with L1 initial data, and a singular integral involving the Dirac-d function is evaluated only in the post-processing step, thus avoiding oscillations and excessive numerical smearing; (2) a local level set method can be utilized to significantly reduce the computation in the phase space. These advantages allow us to compute, for the first time, all physical observables for multidimensional problems in an Eulerian framework. 2004 Elsevier Inc. A High Order Numerical Method for Computing Physical Observables in the Semiclassical Limit of the One-Dimensional Linear Schrödinger Equation with Discontinuous Potentials
We develop a fourth order numerical method for the computation of multivalued physical observables (density, momentum, etc.) in the semiclassical limit of the one dimensional linear Schrödinger equation in the case of discontinuous potentials. We adopt the level set framework developed in [21] which allows one to compute the multivalued physical observables via solving the classical Liouville e...

In this paper, we show how the level set method, developed in [18, 7, 17] for the numerical computation of the semiclassical limit of the Schrödinger equation, can be amended to include the phase shift using the Keller-Maslov index. This gives a more accurate approximation of the physical observables for multivalued solutions in the semiclassical limit. Numerical examples in one and two spaces ...
متن کاملThe Vlasov-Poisson Equations as the Semiclassical Limit of the Schrödinger-Poisson Equations: A Numerical Study
In this paper, we numerically study the semiclassical limit of the SchrödingerPoisson equations as a selection principle for the weak solution of the VlasovPoisson in one space dimension. Our numerical results show that this limit gives the weak solution that agrees with the zero diffusion limit of the Fokker-Planck equation. We also numerically justify the multivalued solution given by a momen...

This work is concerned with the semiclassical approximation of the SchrödingerPoisson equation modeling ballistic transport in a 1D periodic potential by means of WKB techniques. It is derived by considering the mean-field limit of a N -body quantum problem, then K-multivalued solutions are adapted to the treatment of this weakly nonlinear system obtained after homogenization without taking int...
متن کاملMathematical and computational methods for semiclassical Schrödinger equations
We consider time-dependent (linear and nonlinear) Schrödinger equations in a semiclassical scaling. These equations form a canonical class of (nonlinear) dispersive models whose solutions exhibit high frequency oscillations. The design of efficient numerical methods which produce an accurate approximation of the solutions, or, at least, of the associated physical observables, is a formidable ma...
